There are roughly ten holiday weekends a year worth advertising into. The trick is buying one thing that works for all of them.

The selling calendar

  • Presidents Day — The first big retail and auto weekend of the year.
  • Memorial Day — Start of the outdoor season. Garden, patio, recreation.
  • Fourth of July — The biggest single traffic weekend for most roadside businesses.
  • Labor Day — End of summer clearance and back to school tail.
  • Hallowe’en — Pop-ups, farm markets, seasonal retail.
  • Black Friday weekend — Highest intent traffic of the year.
  • Christmas season — Six weeks, tree lots, gift retail, light displays.

Print your name, not the holiday

The instinct is to put the occasion on it: a pumpkin, a flag, a snowflake.

Do not. A blimp printed with your **business name** flies at all ten weekends. One printed with a snowflake flies at two, and you will end up buying more of them.

At 120 feet nobody reads decoration anyway. They read a name, and only if it is bold and short. The holiday is supplied by the calendar; you supply who you are.

Up, down, boxed, repeat

This is the pattern that makes a seasonal purchase pay. Up on Thursday, down on Monday, folded flat in the box it shipped in.

Setup is about ten minutes and one person after the first inflation. Deflating and boxing is quicker than that.

Polyurethane tolerates that cycle indefinitely. PVC, used at the cheap end of the market, stiffens and cracks along the fold lines after a season or two of it, which is exactly the wrong failure for a product bought to be reused.

The arithmetic

A 13-foot blimp is $1,512 once. Across ten holiday weekends a year, that is roughly $150 per weekend in the first year and almost nothing thereafter.

Customers report still flying the same balloon after fourteen years. Helium is the only repeating cost, and a balloon flown ten weekends a year uses very little of it.
